Define a catchment around any UK location and get an instant, evidence-based
profile of it: official deprivation statistics, population structure, housing
market activity, and the real shops, schools and services inside the area.
Deprivation uses each nation's official index (IMD England, WIMD Wales,
SIMD Scotland, NIMDM N. Ireland) at small-area level; each point is
compared only against its own region's average.
How to use it
- Drop a location — click the map (or enter coordinates) and give it a name.
- Catchment type — Circle (straight-line radius, minus rivers & large barriers), Walking (street-network walking distance) or Draw (trace any shape by hand). Types can be mixed in one analysis.
- Area type — Whole counts a neighbourhood in full if the catchment touches it; Proportionate weights each by the share of its buildings inside the catchment.
- Run catchment analysis — the dashboard shows deprivation scores, ranks & deciles vs the regional average, a population pyramid, local-context indicators, and everything mapped inside each catchment.
- Toggle building lines, small-area boundaries, independent/dependent catchments, switch the basemap, and export a branded report from the dashboard.
What's measured inside each catchment
- Deprivation — overall index plus its domains (income, employment, education, health, crime, barriers/access to services, living environment), population-weighted across the small areas the catchment intercepts. England has the 2015 / 2019 / 2025 releases for change over time.
- Population — estimated residents and an age–sex pyramid, compared against the regional profile.
- Places — live counts and locations of shops & retail, food & drink, supermarkets (Geolytix, brand-level), schools, GP practices (NHS register), public transport stops (DfT NaPTAN), leisure & community venues, and residential buildings.
- Housing market — every recorded sale in the last 12 months with the median price and property-type mix (HM Land Registry, England & Wales).
- Planning context — % of the catchment in flood risk zones, green belt and conservation areas, plus listed buildings by grade (Environment Agency / Historic England / MHCLG via planning.data.gov.uk, England).
- Crime — reported street-level crimes over the last 12 months by type (police.uk; England, Wales & Northern Ireland).
- Local context — household income, car ownership, housing tenure and claimant rate vs the national average (ONS / Census 2021 / DWP, England & Wales).
Hover any statistic for its source
and publication date. Datasets appear only where their source covers the area —
a missing chip means no coverage, never a zero.
Who it's for
- Property developers — judge a site by its sales history, price levels, residential mix, tenure and amenity within the exact catchment you define.
- Businesses & retailers — size up footfall drivers, competitors and complements, affluence and demographics around a potential store.
- Town & urban planners — assess deprivation, housing pressure and service access within a proposed development's walk-shed.
- Students & researchers — explore deprivation patterns with real small-area data across index years.
- Community & charity groups — evidence need (deprivation, claimant rates, service gaps) to target programmes and funding bids.
- Curious locals — see how your neighbourhood really compares.
The deprivation domains
The overall index is a weighted combination of seven
domains. You can view any one on its own from the Domain dropdown in the
dashboard. Descriptions below are for England's IMD; the devolved indices
(WIMD / SIMD / NIMDM) use closely-related domains.
- Income Deprivation — the share of people on low income (means-tested
benefits & tax credits, plus low-income asylum seekers). Indicates
the prevalence of poverty and financial hardship. weight 22.5%
- Employment Deprivation — the share of the working-age population
involuntarily out of work (unemployment, incapacity, disability and carer
benefits). Indicates worklessness and exclusion from the labour market. weight 22.5%
- Education, Skills & Training — children's and young people's
attainment and progression, plus adults with no or low qualifications.
Indicates educational disadvantage and local skills levels. weight 13.5%
- Health Deprivation & Disability — premature death, poor general
health, disability and mood/anxiety disorders. Indicates the burden of
ill-health (risk of, not the cause of, deprivation). weight 13.5%
- Crime — recorded rates of violence, burglary, theft and criminal
damage. Indicates the local risk of personal and material victimisation. weight 9.3%
- Barriers to Housing and Services — two parts: geographical
barriers (road distance to a GP, shop, primary school and post office) and
wider barriers (housing affordability, overcrowding and homelessness).
Indicates how hard it is to access housing and everyday services — high
in both remote rural areas and expensive, crowded cities. weight 9.3%
- Living Environment — indoor quality (homes without central heating or
in poor condition) and outdoor quality (air pollution, road-traffic injuries).
Indicates the quality of the local living environment. weight 9.3%
Access to Services (Scotland,
Wales & N. Ireland) is the devolved equivalent of the geographical half of
England's Barriers domain — road/travel time to key services — but does not include
the housing-affordability element.
IMD ranks all ~32,844
LSOAs in England (rank 1 = most deprived; rank 32,844 = least deprived). All analysis runs on your selected
points only.
